Five hot tub no-nos

Whether you're considering a new Leisure Works hot tub or you're already blessed with one at home, are you aware of the do’s and don’ts of hot tub safety, maintenance, and etiquette?

For instance, do you know the best, safest water temps for healthy adults while hot tubbing?  How about the hubbub about a glass or two of wine? Or the big deal about bubble bath, and how much damage it can really cause?

Before you take your next plunge, let's discuss the 5 no-no's for using a hot tub.

1. Hot tubs should never exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit. But the consumer product safety administration recommends that healthy adults soak in temps of 100-degree Fahrenheit for the safest enjoyment. Most hot tub users prefer temperatures in the range of 100°F-102°F. And don't forget to always consult a doctor before using a hot tub if you're pregnant or suffering a medical condition.

2. Alcohol is a depressant and hot water is a stimulant. The two don't mix well, plus those slippery glasses and bottles can shatter leaving glass fragments in and around your hot tub. For safety first, save the alcoholic drinks for after your soak.

3. Bubble bath are so much fun, we understand why it's tempting to add it too your hot but. But don't do it! The slime left behind means hours of cleaning for these mere moments of fun. Plus, it usually means draining the tub and starting fresh with clean water -after cleaning the filters and the spa.

4. If you have an open sore or any virus, you should never enter a hot tub. The hot water will spread the infection. In general, be sure to maintain your sanitizer levels and if you've been ill it's best to check with a doctor before resuming use of your spa.

5. Take a quick shower before you soak to rinse off any lotion, deodorant and sweat. Otherwise, it all ends up in your hot tub and creates a nasty sucm in your spa water. Yuck!
